Wolf Hills
Wolf Hills: The history of “Wolf Hills” before it became Abingdon, Virginia: the area was known as Wolf Hills. According to local tradition, explorer Daniel Boone traveled through the region around 1760 and encountered a pack of wolves near the hills surrounding what is now Abingdon. The encounter inspired the name “Wolf Hills.” The settlement retained the colorful frontier name for several years before being officially established as Abingdon in 1778. The town was named after Abingdon, England, although historians have debated exactly which person or place inspired the choice. Today, the name Wolf Hills remains an important part of Abingdon’s identity, preserving a little piece of its wild frontier past.
